Screen Australia backs Screenwave’s Film Outreach project

Press release: Screen Australia

The work by the team at Screenwave on New South Wales’ Coffs Coast has caught the attention of Screen Australia’s Enterprise Ideas funding initiative, taking their film festivals and screen culture projects national. Screenwave’s new sister organisation, Film Outreach Australia, will distribute Screenwave’s curated film festival and exhibition programs to screening venues in regional communities across the nation.

Chosen as one of 19 projects sharing in $2.9 million in funding, Film Outreach Australia will offer “audience ready” film programs to screening venues, taking the complexity out of offering a film program for local and visiting audiences.

“Seeing the groundswell of support for Screenwave’s programs in Coffs Harbour and Bellingen, we were being contacted by lots of different venues around Australia asking for help starting their own film programs,” said Screenwave and Film Outreach director Dave Horsley. “So we are taking the most difficult aspects of audience development out of it for other regional venues and replicating the success we’ve had here on the Coffs Coast”.

Programs offered will include a travelling version of Screenwave’s programs, including the Screenwave International Film Festival, REC Ya Shorts Youth Film Festival, Cinematinee, and a new Australian film program aimed at bringing regional Australian stories to the big screen in regional communities.

In the meantime, the 2018 Screenwave International Film Festival comes back for year 3 between January 10 and 25 on the Coffs Coast, exhibiting 72 feature films, hosting 20 filmmaker guests, offering filmmaking workshops through AFTRS, Screenworks, and Noiselab, and launching the new SWIFF Light Box program – a free outdoor projection art exhibition lighting up buildings and public spaces in Coffs Harbour (Jan 19 – 25).
